At Speech Pathways, our work is about more than words. It is about recognizing challenges, celebrating strengths, and unlocking each child’s potential.

Malik Burdan, one of our licensed speech language pathologists, recently shared a powerful story about a student he was fortunate to work with. This student came from an underserved population and was ultimately diagnosed with dyslexia.

“Some school districts deny that dyslexia even exists,” Malik explains. “But it is a federally recognized learning difference, and speech language pathologists are trained to support it.”

For this student, the journey included hands-on work in areas like letter orientation and understanding word structure, such as learning when to use “k” or “ck.” Malik emphasizes that dyslexia is not a limitation. In fact, many students with dyslexia have highly creative minds and excel in visual spatial reasoning. It is not about a lack of intelligence, but about teaching in a way that fits how their brains work.

The most exciting part? “His mom brought in his report cards,” Malik says, “and we saw a direct correlation between his improvement in reading and writing and the time he started coming here. Being able to see that growth in numbers was so meaningful.”

This story is a reminder: when early intervention meets the right support, real progress happens. And sometimes, it shows up clearly in both confidence and report cards.
